Carrie Underwood Breaks Down in Tears During Emotional Idol Audition That Hits Different 20 Years After Her Own Life-Changing Win

Carrie Underwood is the newest face on American Idol, joining as a judge for the upcoming season set to premiere in March.

Emotions are understandably running high since this marks a full-circle moment for the country star, who won the singing competition two decades ago.

However, in the show’s latest trailer, the “Before He Cheats” singer couldn’t hold back her emotions for an entirely different reason.

Filming for auditions is already underway with just a few weeks left until American Idol returns. That means Underwood, along with returning judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, are busy handing out Golden Tickets to deserving contestants.

Fans have gotten an early look at some of these auditions, and one performance in particular managed to move Underwood to tears.

The show released a teaser video featuring a montage of contestants who will audition and advance to the next round. While full auditions and contestant stories haven’t been revealed yet, the clip does give a glimpse of the judges interacting with them.

In one moment, Underwood is seen with tears in her eyes as she talks to a contestant who told a story about their child.

“Even though this was about your son, every single person can fill in that memory,” Underwood says, voice shaking.

Although we don’t hear the full story from the contestant, it’s clear why a story about potentially losing a child would affect Underwood the way it did. With two sons of her own, shared with her husband Mike Fisher, the topic definitely hit close to home. It looks like this upcoming season will be packed with unforgettable moments.

Season 23 of American Idol will air on Sunday, March 9, on ABC.

Watch the moment Carrie Underwood shed tears after a contestant’s audition in the video below.

And last week, on his new boss’s very first day, he stood up in a staff meeting and said what nobody else would. He told executive producer Nick Bilton he’d “never be welcome here.” He accused CBS chief Bari Weiss of “murdering” 60 Minutes. But what Pelley claimed they asked him to do behind the scenes — that part changes everything. Within 24 hours, he was handed a termination letter. Fired “for cause.” 37 years, gone in a single page. Then Saturday morning, he posted a photo on Instagram. No anger. Just him at the helm of a sailboat, hands on the wheel, American flag behind him, looking out at open water. His only words: “You are the wind in my sails. So deeply grateful.”
