NBC’s long-running singing competition The Voice has surprised fans with a sudden schedule change, reshuffling its broadcast times and reducing airtime just as Season 28 enters its most competitive stage — the Knockouts.

Traditionally, The Voice airs twice a week: a two-hour episode on Mondays and a one-hour follow-up on Tuesdays. However, this season has seen a series of programming adjustments as NBC prioritizes live NBA basketball coverage on Tuesday nights. As a result, the network has removed The Voice entirely from its Tuesday schedule and shortened the Monday episodes to a single hour.

Starting Monday, November 3, The Voice now airs from 9/8c to 10/9c. This revised one-hour slot has been confirmed for the November 3 and November 10 episodes. Before The Voice, NBC will air two 30-minute episodes of St. Dennis Medical, followed by Brilliant Minds immediately after. On November 10, that lineup will shift slightly, with The Paper joining the pre-show slot. The network has not clarified how long this reduced schedule will remain in effect.
The change has left viewers puzzled and frustrated. Many took to social media to express confusion about why the series — one of NBC’s most-watched programs — has been shortened during one of its most anticipated rounds. Some fans worried that the reduced airtime might mean performances will be edited down or that fewer contestants will be shown per episode. Others questioned whether the network’s prioritization of sports over live competition entertainment could affect the show’s momentum leading into the Playoffs.

This adjustment comes at a critical moment in the season. The Knockout Round features the Top 32 contestants — eight on each team under coaches Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire, Niall Horan, and Snoop Dogg. Unlike the earlier Battle Rounds, there are no Steals or Saves, meaning each singer must win their head-to-head matchup to advance. Contestants choose their own songs, and coaches judge performances based on vocal control, emotional depth, and stage presence.
To add excitement, Season 28 introduced a new feature called the Mic Drop Button, allowing coaches to spotlight a performance they believe deserves special recognition. Once the Knockouts conclude, each coach will have four artists remaining for the Playoffs, where live audience voting begins.

According to reports, NBC plans to return to a two-night schedule for the finale in mid-December. The rumored finale dates are Monday, December 15, for the performance show and Tuesday, December 16, for the results. However, this has not been officially confirmed by the network.

In the meantime, basketball fans will continue to occupy The Voice’s former Tuesday time slot, with NBA coverage expected to continue throughout the season. While this strategy may make sense from a ratings perspective, it has sparked debate among loyal Voice viewers who feel the show deserves consistency during its most dramatic phase.
Despite the uncertainty, enthusiasm for the contestants remains strong. Standouts like Aiden Ross from Team Niall, Jazz McKenzie from Team Bublé, and Carolina Rodriguez from Team Snoop have been drawing attention for their standout performances.
Still, with tighter airtime and shifting schedules, fans are left wondering whether the new one-hour episodes can capture the same energy and storytelling that The Voice is known for. For now, the message from NBC is simple: the show must go on — just a little shorter and a little later than before.
