The first night of The Voice Season 28 Battles ended with an emotional twist — and a tearful Reba McEntire moment that fans won’t soon forget.
As the teams faced off for the first time this season, Michael Bublé’s country hopefuls Rob Cole and Austin Gilbert closed out the night with a lively rendition of Blake Shelton’s hit “Honey Bee.”
With both contestants boasting classic country tones, their duet brought easy charm and good old-fashioned energy to the stage — even if it wasn’t the flashiest performance of the night.

Austin, rocking his signature mustache, leaned into the song’s playful vibe and gave the number an extra dose of personality. Rob, meanwhile, showcased steady vocals and effortless confidence, earning praise from Bublé for his control and tone. The judges applauded both men for their chemistry and authenticity, but when the time came to choose, Bublé ultimately declared Rob the winner.
That’s when Reba — visibly emotional — hit her button and stole Austin onto her team. With tears in her eyes, the country icon told him, “You’re a cowboy,” praising his heart, energy, and unmistakable country grit. The moment marked one of the most heartfelt steals of the night, proving once again that Reba’s instincts for authenticity and storytelling are as sharp as ever.

Monday’s episode marked the beginning of the Battles round, where contestants, for the first time in The Voice history, got to choose their own duet partners. The night featured powerhouse performances, two saves, three eliminations, and plenty of surprises — but Reba’s emotional steal was easily the highlight.

Elsewhere in the episode, Team Snoop’s Yoshihanaa narrowly defeated Natalia Albertini on Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” (with Natalia saved by Snoop), while Team Reba’s Aaron Nichols bested Daron Lamee on “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.” Over on Team Niall, Dustin Dale Gaspard edged out Revel Day with “Too Sweet,” and Bublé’s Jazz McKenzie advanced after a dynamic battle with Trinity on “Virtual Insanity.”

Still, it was the final country showdown that brought the night to a heartfelt close. As the stage lights dimmed and the coaches stood to applaud, Reba — the queen of country herself — made it clear why she couldn’t let Austin go.
“Sometimes it’s not just about the perfect note,” she said, smiling through tears. “It’s about the heart behind it.”

And just like that, The Voice Season 28’s first Battle night wrapped up with Reba stealing the show — and a cowboy.
