Season 28 of The Voice kicked off with the kind of playful banter and heartfelt connections fans have come to love—but it was a behind-the-scenes bond between Niall Horan and Blake Shelton that has everyone talking.
For Niall Horan, best known for his success with One Direction and his flourishing solo career, joining The Voice as a coach opened the door to new friendships, surprises, and lessons in mentorship. But it was his relationship with country legend Blake Shelton that left the most lasting impact.
On the set, their playful dynamic was instantly apparent. During their overlapping stint as coaches in Season 23, Shelton jokingly referred to Horan as his “son,” poking fun at their age gap and building an inside joke that quickly became a fan favorite. But what started as TV banter soon grew into something deeper.
“Blake, he’s like a dad to me. Y’know, he’s really helped me during the show. I’ve really enjoyed his company, and watching him has been a real honor,” Horan revealed in a candid interview. “Me and the cowboy became good friends very quick. We realized we’re very similar people. For the good and the bad. He’s so funny—from the minute we met him.”
The mentor-mentee relationship went far beyond the stage lights. Shelton, who has been a pillar on The Voice for over a decade, welcomed Horan with genuine warmth and advice. Their friendship, filled with good-natured teasing about Oklahoma ranch life and family roles, was also underscored by mutual respect.
In fact, when Michael Bublé jokingly referred to Horan as “my son” in the premiere episode of Season 28, Horan was quick to play along—while also declaring his loyalty: “I’m Blake’s son. I always will be.”
Shelton himself has acknowledged the special connection, telling producers, “I feel like Niall is going to take my seat on the show…I’m passing the baton on to my son.” Their chemistry spilled off-camera as well, with humorous exchanges about family trees and long-lost relatives: “We just found each other after 29 years,” Shelton joked in a behind-the-scenes video, prompting Horan to tease, “No offense to my dad. To the point where I’m thinking about firing my own dad.”
While Horan has a loving father at home in Ireland, he admits that Shelton’s guidance and friendship on The Voice set filled a unique role—a father figure and an unexpected friend at a pivotal moment in his career.
With Season 28 underway, new faces like Michael Bublé may join in on the inside jokes, but for Horan, his bond with Shelton remains unshakable—a reminder that, sometimes, music’s most meaningful connections happen when the cameras aren’t rolling.
