Blake Shelton is hitting the road again—this time with a new reality singing competition series, The Road, set to premiere October 19 on CBS and Paramount+. The former The Voice coach is assembling a lineup of country music heavyweights as guest mentors, including Dustin Lynch, Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town, Jordan Davis, and Brothers Osborne.
The show follows 12 contestants as they compete for a $250,000 prize and a record deal, performing as the opening act on Keith Urban’s tour. Each night, competitors must choose a cover, perform an original song, and connect with a live audience, which then votes on who advances.
Shelton, who also serves as executive producer, explained the real-world premise of the show: “We’ve all been in that position of opening for somebody, walking out and facing a crowd that doesn’t care who we are. Watching these musicians night after night, having to choose a song, cover a song, and perform an original—making these decisions on how to connect with this audience—is a real-world truth about being an artist on the road.”
The sneak peek trailer, shared on The Road’s Instagram, shows Shelton not just behind the scenes but actively cheering on contestants and mentoring them. The series provides fans with a unique perspective on the realities of touring, with live competitions in six cities where audience members at Keith Urban concerts vote on which opening acts move forward.
“There is not a musician in Nashville that wouldn’t want the opportunity to have the stage before a superstar like Keith Urban,” Shelton said. “They’re going to show people what these artists go through.”
The Road promises a combination of country music star power, real-world performance challenges, and interactive audience participation, giving viewers a front-row seat to the highs and lows of making it in the music industry.
The series premieres October 19 at 9:00 p.m. ET on CBS and will also stream on Paramount+.
