During a recent Tonight Show interview, Blake Shelton found himself hilariously blindsided by Jimmy Fallon—and it all started with a trip down memory lane.
The Voice coach was chatting with Fallon about the host’s rollercoaster adventure at Universal Orlando when Fallon suddenly asked, “You know what I wanna see? Who I want to see on that ride with their hair blowing in the wind? It’s this Blake Shelton, you know this guy?”
Moments later, Fallon revealed the pièce de résistance: a throwback photo of Shelton sporting a long, flowing mullet from his early career. The image, sourced from a viral post by Fallon’s wife, Gwen Stefani, immediately sent the audience into a frenzy.
“What in the world?” Fallon exclaimed as Shelton’s retro hairstyle—complete with silky curls and majestic length—dominated the screen. Without missing a beat, Shelton took a theatrical bow, prompting Fallon’s band to jokingly play him offstage.
Once seated, Shelton defended his fashion choices with good humor. “Hey, we’re not in New York City anymore, people like the mullet,” he insisted. Fallon pressed him with questions about the iconic look: when it was from, why he got it, and how it came to be.
Shelton laughed, offering a tongue-in-cheek explanation: “I think it was cheaper just to get half a haircut back then. Just cut what you can.” He added with confidence, “It was cool back then, shut up! Everybody knows [the mullet] was cool back then.”
Fallon, never one to pass up a joke, then pulled out his own mullet photo from his Weekend Update days on Saturday Night Live, asking Shelton, “Is this cool?”
Shelton, cracking up, didn’t hold back. “Just the worst. I can’t believe you made it.”
The playful back-and-forth between the two stars had the audience in stitches, proving that even in 2025, the mullet—and a good laugh—never goes out of style.
