Inside Australia’s biggest family – try not to smile when you see all the kids today

When Jeni first met her husband Ray, she was certain of one thing — children were not part of her plan. She laughs now at how clear she once was about that. “Ray wanted at least four kids. I thought that was crazy. Like, who has that many children?” she told Mamamia.

Fast forward more than three decades, and Jeni and Ray are the proud parents of not four, not eight, but sixteen children. Yes, sixteen. What started as a compromise turned into a family that could fill multiple minivans, with each day bringing a mix of chaos, love, and routine.

From their home in Toowoomba, Queensland, the Bonells have raised nine boys and seven girls — Jesse, 35, Brooke, 34, Claire, 31, Natalie, 30, Karl, 28, Samuel, 26, Cameron, 25, Sabrina, 24, Tim, 22, Brandon, 20, Eve, 19, Nate, 17, Rachel, 16, Eric, 15, Damian, 14, and the youngest, Katelyn, just 10. Two have since married and made the Bonells grandparents, but even with a couple of children moved out, the household is still bustling with at least eight at home at any given time.

Keeping so many mouths fed is no small task. Jeni spends around $600 every week on groceries, a number that’s crept up by $50 with inflation. To put that in perspective, the Bonells go through 50 liters of milk in a week, 14 boxes of cereal, 45 tubs of yogurt, and about four dozen eggs. Add in one or two loaves of bread every single day, and you begin to understand the sheer scale of it. Two trolleys of groceries is standard, and Jeni always has a child on hand to help push one.

But food is only the beginning. Laundry alone is its own daily marathon — three full loads, which translates to about six average-sized ones, are washed, dried, and folded every single day. Then there’s the school and activities calendar: multiple schools, part-time jobs for the older kids, endless sports commitments, and study schedules to keep track of. “I used to think life was busy with little kids,” Jeni admits, “but I’m certainly busier these days with older children.”

Evenings are where the Bonell routine comes alive in full color. “Take an average-sized family and multiply it by eight, and that’s what our evening routine is like,” Jeni says with a laugh. Dinner is always a big event — sometimes there are only eight at the table, sometimes more than 20 when older children, partners, or friends come by. Jeni has learned how to stretch every dollar, cooking budget-friendly meals that cost between $2 and $10 per person. She shares her tips on YouTube, inspiring other families struggling with rising food costs. Her children are also active contributors: by the time they’re 12, they can cook dinner for 20 with minimal help.

Organization is the only way life works with sixteen children. A chore chart and roster system means that once a child turns eight, they’re on duty. They rotate through sweeping, mopping, clearing the table, or meal prep. Everyone pulls their weight. Jeni’s even mastered snack prep, using the air fryer for egg cups and pizza bites that freeze well for school lunches.

Of course, family life isn’t just about chores. There are moments of laughter, teasing, and connection woven through the chaos. “Getting a good family photo is difficult,” Jeni says. “Someone’s always looking away or pulling a face. But those are the quirks we love — that’s who we are.”

While critics sometimes question their choice to have such a large family, Jeni and Ray remain unapologetic. They’re deeply religious and attend church regularly, but they insist their faith isn’t the only reason behind their big brood. “God has a funny sense of humor,” Jeni jokes. Ray, who works as an electrician, is straightforward: “People have to do what’s right for them. Having 16 kids isn’t for everyone, but it’s what works for us.”

Finances are managed carefully. The Bonells make sacrifices while paying off their mortgage, and they take pride in not relying on government support. “It’s expensive,” Jeni admits, “but we make it work.” And somehow, amidst the whirlwind of responsibility, Jeni and Ray carve out time for each other. “Do I get alone time with my wife? Of course, I do,” Ray says. “It’s important to look after each other.”

The Bonell family is proof that systems, humor, and love can transform what might look impossible into daily life. They stretch dollars, stretch patience, and stretch their hearts to fit everyone in. With children spanning decades in age and grandchildren now entering the fold, their family continues to grow — not just in size, but in love and resilience.

At the end of the day, the Bonells show that family doesn’t have to be perfect or picture-ready. It’s about teamwork, laughter, faith, and the willingness to embrace chaos. Sixteen children may sound overwhelming to most of us, but for Jeni and Ray, it’s not just a number. It’s their adventure, their calling, and their joy.
