Gwen Stefani Reflects on Winning a CMT Award with Blake Shelton: “Inconceivable”

Gwen Stefani has enjoyed an impressive and diverse career—from her punk-rock beginnings with No Doubt to pop superstardom and her influential role on The Voice. Yet, one of her most surprising and cherished milestones came in the country music world alongside her husband, Blake Shelton.

In an October 2020 interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Stefani opened up about the moment she and Shelton won the CMT Award for Collaborative Video of the Year for their duet “Nobody But You.” Considering her roots in punk and pop, Stefani confessed that the achievement still “shocked” her.

“When you say that, I get shocked,” Stefani told Meyers, reflecting on her unexpected journey into country music. “I love to play this game with myself where I picture myself in my Voice chair… because I didn’t know Blake Shelton existed before I went on that show.”

She continued, “Meanwhile, he’s literally one of the biggest [country stars], you know? So I just always like to picture myself and think about before I knew him and that person I didn’t know at all. And then imagine that now, he’s my boyfriend, and I won [a country song award]. It’s inconceivable that we would even know each other and be friends, let alone do music together.”

Despite their different musical backgrounds, Stefani noted how naturally their worlds have come together. “We have so many things that come together, and we’re the same even with music.”

The couple officially tied the knot in 2021 after several years of dating, and Shelton has spoken openly about the profound impact Stefani has had on his life. In an interview with The Good Dish, he said, “We found each other at a very low point in each other’s lives. She kept me from going to the absolute bottom… it was like literally falling off a cliff and a hand reached out and caught me.”

Shelton added, “I’ve never had that with somebody where it just felt like, no matter what, she has my back. It’s the greatest feeling ever.”

From different musical genres to a shared life and collaborative success, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton’s journey continues to inspire both fans and fellow artists alike—proving that sometimes the most “inconceivable” partnerships are the most rewarding.
