Blake Shelton Draws Strength from Father’s Stepfather Role as He Embraces Life with Gwen Stefani’s Boys

Country superstar Blake Shelton’s journey into stepfatherhood is deeply rooted in his own family history, shaped by the example set by his father, Dick Shelton. Raised in Ada, Oklahoma, Blake witnessed firsthand how his dad embraced the role of stepfather to his older half-brother Richie, a commitment that later gave Blake the confidence to step into a similar role with his wife Gwen Stefani’s three sons.

Blake was born in 1976 to Dorothy Shackleford and Dick Shelton. However, Dorothy’s first child, Richie, born in 1966 from a previous marriage, was raised by Dick Shelton from infancy. Blake has shared in interviews how Richie always considered Dick his dad, underscoring the strong familial bond that was cultivated from a young age. This early dynamic provided Blake with a powerful model of stepfatherhood — one defined not just by responsibility, but by love and acceptance.

Tragically, Richie died in a car accident in 1990 when Blake was just 14 years old, a loss that profoundly affected the family and inspired Blake to write heartfelt songs like “Over You.” This tragic event further highlights the deep ties that bound the family together and the important role Dick played as a father figure.

Fast forward to Blake’s own life: his marriage to Gwen Stefani in July 2021 brought him into the role of stepdad to her three sons — Kingston, Zuma, and Apollo — from her previous marriage to Gavin Rossdale. Blake has spoken candidly about how watching his father’s example helped him embrace this responsibility with confidence. At a Country Radio Seminar in Nashville, he remarked, “You got three boys? Awesome! My dad did it. My dad raised me. I could do this.”

Their relationship, which began in 2014 on the set of The Voice, initially came with concerns from Gwen about how her children might adjust to Blake. But his lived experience with his father’s loving stepfather role reassured him, and over time, Blake has expressed how he has fallen in love with Gwen’s boys “every day,” echoing the same kind of bond Dick Shelton had with Richie.

Blake Shelton’s story is a powerful testament to the enduring influence of family examples and the ways in which love and commitment can transcend biology, forging bonds that truly make a family.
