“WAIT… CHEVROLET CHOSE THEM?” The Red Clay Strays are bringing back Chevrolet’s legendary “Heartbeat of America” campaign more than 30 years after it disappeared. Fans say this unexpected collaboration could be one of the band’s biggest milestones yet – and their new version of the iconic anthem is already turning heads.

Red Clay Strays

Chevrolet went with the perfect band to revive their “Heartbeat of America.”

There’s a certain segment of the population that probably remembers the car manufacturer’s original run of “Heartbeat of America” advertisements. Popular in the 1980s and 1990s, Chevrolet set out to show that it’s the people all across the country that help to shape the United States… and implied that those people are often behind the wheels of Chevrolets.

If you’ve never seen it, here’s a throwback advertisement for you:

Man, remember when advertising was a real art form?

It was a very patriotic ad campaign back in the day, and for America 250 – our country’s 250th birthday celebration – Chevrolet decided to bring it back. They just needed to find a band to help bring the jingle back to life, and GM News explains that they went with a little group out of Mobile, Alabama that you’ve probably heard of:

“Chevrolet’s iconic ‘Heartbeat of America’ campaign has returned, and with it, a simple idea: America’s heartbeat is its people. Reintroduced in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary, the campaign revives one of Chevrolet’s most recognizable themes from the Eighties and Nineties, this time with a modern sound from country rock band The Red Clay Strays.”

What a smart selection by Chevrolet.

They needed to choose a group to help them revive their decades-old anthem. What better choice than the Red Clay Strays, whose sound and aura could fit along the musical timeline at really any point? The band behind hits like “Wondering Why” and “Wanna Be Loved” feel like they align with the heartbeat of America already… Chevy just went and made it official.

Steve Majoros, the Chief Marketing Officer of Global Chevrolet, explained why it felt right to bring back the iconic campaign in the modern day to GM News:

“‘Heartbeat of America’ has always celebrated Chevrolet’s connection to the people and communities that shape this country. Chevy owners have always been the people who show up, the DIY-ers, the helpful neighbors – the true heartbeat in their communities. This campaign honors them.”

So now, when you are flipping through the channels of your TV and think you hear the powerful vocals of Brandon Coleman, you probably are. The frontman of the Red Clay Strays and his band are now the official voice of Chevy’s Heartbeat of America… right in time for America to celebrate its 250th birthday.

Here’s a look at the commercial (crazy to willingly watch a commercial… I know) in case you wanted to see how it all came together:

The Red Clay Strays are the soundtrack to a global brand’s ad campaign? Good for them.

And good for the rest of the world. Most have already stumbled upon the genius of The Red Clay Strays, but if they haven’t, this commercial could help give them a push in the right direction. Brandon Coleman and the rest of the band didn’t just record a snippet of the jingle… they recorded a full length “Heartbeat of America,” which is now available for your listening pleasure.
