FOR EVERY SOLDIER WHO NEVER MADE IT HOME.” Cody Johnson Returns To The ACM Awards Stage Months After Emergency Surgery And Delivers An Emotional “Travelin’ Soldier” Performance That Leaves Veterans, Military Families, And Country Fans In Tears

Cody Johnson returned to the ACM Awards stage with a deeply emotional and patriotic performance of “Travelin’ Soldier” that left the crowd visibly shaken.

One year after winning the Academy of Country Music Awards’ Song of the Year trophy for “Dirt Cheap,” Johnson stepped back into the spotlight carrying even more emotional weight than before. Just moments after being named Male Artist of the Year, the Texas native delivered his powerful rendition of “Travelin’ Soldier,” the heartbreaking military ballad first made famous by The Chicks in 2002 — and for many viewers, it became far more than just another awards show performance.

An outspoken supporter of America’s military and veterans, Johnson has spent years honoring the sacrifices made by service members and their families. His live performances of “Travelin’ Soldier” quickly became one of the most emotional moments of his concerts, often bringing entire arenas to silence before crowds erupted into singalongs. In November 2025, just ahead of Veteran’s Day, Cody officially released a studio version of the song as a tribute to the men and women who serve the country.

For his ACM Awards performance, Johnson stood alone beneath a massive American flag while emotional war footage and images honoring soldiers played across giant screens behind him. As he sang the song’s devastating lyrics about love, sacrifice, and loss, the atmosphere inside the arena shifted completely. Fans could be seen wiping away tears while others stood with hands over their hearts. By the final chorus, much of the audience was singing along, and when Cody finished the song, the crowd rose to its feet in a thunderous standing ovation.

The emotional moment came after one of the most difficult and life-changing years of Cody Johnson’s career.

In late October, Cody and his wife, Brandi, welcomed their third child and first son, Jaycee Daniel — a joyful milestone that arrived during an incredibly painful chapter behind the scenes.

Just weeks earlier, CoJo had suffered a ruptured eardrum that required emergency surgery and forced the “‘Til You Can’t” singer to postpone the remainder of his 2025 concerts. At the time, fans feared the injury could threaten not only his tour, but potentially his ability to sing for months.

“The healing process will take many weeks, and it is not possible for me to sing during this time,” Johnson shared on Instagram. “Without the surgery, my downtime could be months.”

The country star later posted a video from home following the procedure, wearing a bandage over his left ear and reassuring fans that the surgery had gone “as best as they could have expected.” But many close to the singer admitted the recovery process was physically and emotionally exhausting.

By February, Johnson had fought his way back to the stage to launch his Leather Deluxe Tour in Louisville, Kentucky. Since then, he has headlined Stagecoach, joined George Strait for a sold-out concert at Clemson Stadium, and continued one of the biggest runs of his career.

This year alone, Johnson earned four ACM Awards nominations, including Single of the Year and Visual Media of the Year for “The Fall,” along with nominations in two of the night’s most prestigious categories: Male Artist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year.

With 21 ACM Awards nominations throughout his career and his first ACM victory arriving just last year, Cody Johnson’s rise in country music has become one of the genre’s most powerful modern success stories. He was also named the recipient of the ACM Spirit Award, an honor inspired by Merle Haggard and given to artists who carry on Haggard’s legacy through authentic storytelling, genuine performances, and unwavering individuality.

But for many fans watching the ACM Awards, Cody Johnson’s performance of “Travelin’ Soldier” represented something even bigger than awards or accolades. In a moment filled with heartbreak, patriotism, and gratitude, he reminded millions of Americans why country music has always been deeply connected to the people who serve, sacrifice, and never make it home.

THE COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME CALLED HIS NAME. HE NEVER GOT TO HEAR IT. In 1961, Columbia Records had almost given up on Jimmy Dean. No hits in years. One last chance — that was it. He sat down and wrote “Big Bad John.” A story about a quiet miner who gave his life to save the men around him. Took him less than two hours. That song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won him a Grammy. But here’s where it gets strange. His TV show made a puppet dog named Rowlf so famous, the show got 2,000 fan letters a week — mostly for the dog. Jim Henson was so grateful he offered Dean 40% of what would become the Muppets empire. Dean turned it down. “I didn’t do anything to earn that,” he said. He later built a sausage company from nothing and sold it for $80 million. In 2010, he was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame — but passed away just months before the ceremony. His daughter Connie walked up to accept the medallion alone. A country boy from Plainview, Texas, who gave away more than most people ever earn.
