17-year-old country talent Slater Nalley had a touching story to tell on American Idol for his 2025 audition, and his performance soon had judge Carrie Underwood in tears. The singer-songwriter wrote a song for his high school teacher Mrs. Davis’s late son Carter, based on a poem that she wrote. The Atlanta-based teen was nervous at first, but once he started singing his song “Traces of You,” he was just in his element and delivered a raw and powerful performance.

Slater has a special kind of voice that just comes straight from the heart and is full of character and emotion. We has to say that Slater’s unique voice, when combined with his songwriting and guitar playing, makes him a real force to be reckoned with this season. Both Underwood and Mrs. Davis teared up as he sang, and it was clear that he’d won over all three judges with his touching performance.

American Idol uploaded Slater’s audition to YouTube on February 28, 2025, and in the month since then, his audition has been viewed a hefty 2.7 million times. Fans knew they were seeing something special and added comments such as “What an authentic, raw voice. With a heart like that, this young man will go far” and “When you touch someone’s heart and bring a tear, you are a songwriter and singer. You have a gift.”

American Idol featured several impressive country performances this season. The 25-year-old singer-songwriter Sam Sparks, from Dardanelle, Arkansas, also shared his story on the show after he overcame a car accident that left him in a wheelchair. He found solace through music after the accident and played his original song “Colorado Gray” that chronicled his personal journey in an intense performance.

Slater received high praise after his audition on “Traces of You.”

Underwood addressed Mrs. Davis and then Slater with her comments, saying, “Even though this was about your son, every single person that hears that can fill in that memory with somebody that’s in themselves. I couldn’t have imagined you doing that any better.” Lionel Richie praised Slater’s songwriting, saying, “That one line, ‘Your life was like a river running home,’ that moves man. That’s the one. Very powerful.” The judges were so impressed that Richie declared that they didn’t even need to vote on Slater’s audition, and they told him together that he would be going to Hollywood for the next round.
