As the 2026 Kentucky Derby entered its final stretch, it looked like Irad Ortiz Jr. had the moment under control — until another horse suddenly came flying from behind. Riding Golden Tempo, his own brother Jose Ortiz made a late charge so aggressive and unexpected that the crowd inside Churchill Downs erupted instantly.

The final stretch of the 2026 Kentucky Derby saw race favorite Renegade and longshot Golden Tempo surge forward, with Golden Tempo getting a historic win.

It was a thrilling finish, and also a big day for two brothers.

Jose Ortiz (Golden Tempo) and Irad Ortiz Jr. (Renegade) were the jockeys atop the top two finishing horses at Churchill Downs on Saturday. You probably don’t need us to tell you that’s a first in race history.

The brothers exchanged a fist bump after crossing the finish line.

The win was Jose’s first at the Kentucky Derby. He also won the Kentucky Oaks atop Always a Runner on Friday, making him the ninth jockey to pull off the double at Churchill Downs.

He said he hopes his brother Irad joins him in reaching the winner’s circle some day, but made clear he was happy to get there first while speaking with NBC Sports:

“I want him to win the Derby, of course. I know it’s his dream as well, but it happened my way. I think he should be happy, his horse ran a very nice race, it’s a very nice horse. It was my year, today’s my day. It was Golden Tempo’s day.”

It was a bittersweet moment for Irad, who celebrated with Jose but still had to be consoled by Renegade owner Mike Repole, who could be heard joking “f*** your brother” before saying “If you’re going to f***ing lose, lose to your brother.”

Laurie Metcalf just won Best Featured Actress in a Play at the 79th Tony Awards for her role as Linda Loman in Death of a Salesman — alongside Nathan Lane, directed by Joe Mantello. This is her 3rd Tony. Her 7th nomination. But what she did at Radio City Music Hall wasn’t about the numbers. She stood up there and named 6 people. Not agents. Not producers. Six college friends from Illinois State University who started Steppenwolf Theatre together — in a church basement. Gary Sinise. John Malkovich. Jeff Perry. Terry Kinney. Moira Harris. Al Wilder. “I still consider them family,” she said. “I still draw on lessons I learned from them.” After everything — the Emmys, the Oscar nomination, decades on Roseanne — the first people she thanked were the ones who knew her before any of it mattered. Some things don’t change, even after 50 years.

He told executive producer Nick Bilton he’d “never be welcome here.” He accused CBS chief Bari Weiss of “murdering” 60 Minutes. But what Pelley claimed they asked him to do behind the scenes — that part changes everything. Within 24 hours, he was handed a termination letter. Fired “for cause.” 37 years, gone in a single page. Then Saturday morning, he posted a photo on Instagram. No anger. Just him at the helm of a sailboat, hands on the wheel, American flag behind him, looking out at open water. His only words: “You are the wind in my sails. So deeply grateful.”
