American Idol frontrunner Hannah Harper took on a familiar favorite during the Top 12 live show, revisiting “Heads Carolina, Tails California” on the American Idol stage, this time with an uptempo arrangement that gave the performance a fresh energy compared to her original audition.

The April 6 episode, part of the 2026 Judges’ Song Contest, opened with host Ryan Seacrest revealing the final Top 12 lineup following last week’s voting delay. Contestants Jake Thistle and Julián Kalel were eliminated, narrowing the field as the competition moved forward into the live performance rounds.

For this week’s challenge, judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie each selected songs from the 1990s, leaving the Top 12 contestants to choose from three options. Harper ultimately selected “Heads Carolina, Tails California” by Jo Dee Messina—a track she had previously performed during her audition phase, but approached this time with a more upbeat tempo and a live-show polish.

Underwood, who had chosen the song for Harper, expressed clear pride in the performance while offering continued guidance. “That’s what happens when you get the perfect voice with the perfect song and there’s just magic happening all on that stage,” she said. “You sounded so great. I loved the modulation. You looked like you were having fun. I feel like Hannah’s starting to come out of her shell a little bit. We want a little more of that, please.”

Bryan echoed the positive feedback, noting that the uptempo direction suited Harper well. Richie also praised her delivery, adding, “The thing that makes it so wonderful is you just stepped into it and made it yours. I love it.” Their comments reflected both approval of her artistic growth and encouragement to continue building confidence as the competition intensifies.
Harper’s decision to revisit a song tied to her earlier Idol journey added an extra layer of significance to the performance, highlighting how far she has progressed since her initial audition. As one of the standout contestants of the season, she continues to balance technical vocal control with evolving stage presence, a combination that has kept her in strong standing with both judges and viewers.

With the Judges’ Song Contest underway and a Bottom 2 save still in play for the winning judge, each performance carries added weight. Harper’s latest showing not only reinforced her frontrunner status but also underscored her ongoing development as she pushes deeper into the live rounds of Season 24
