A GRANDFATHER’S FINAL WISH: MICHAEL BUBLÉ GIFTS VANCOUVER HOME TO FILIPINA CAREGIVER
In a powerful display of family devotion and profound gratitude, Canadian crooner Michael Bublé honored the last wish of his late grandfather, Demetrio Santanga, by gifting his beloved Vancouver home to the grandfather’s devoted caregiver, Minette. This heartwarming act, featured on the HGTV reality show Celebrity IOU, highlighted the deep bond formed between the Bublé family and the caregiver who had become one of their own.
Eight Years of Dedication: A True Family Member
Minette, a native of the Philippines, was hired to provide in-home care for Bublé’s grandfather, Demetrio, who was affectionately known as “Grandpa Midge.” Though Demetrio was initially hesitant about having a caregiver, Minette’s compassionate and kind nature quickly broke down his reservations.
Minette dedicated eight years to caring for both Demetrio and Bublé’s grandmother, living in an apartment space within the house. Michael Bublé himself stated that Minette became “family almost instantly.” He also noted that she selflessly sent almost every dollar she earned back to her family in the Philippines, making it difficult for her to establish her own home base in Canada.
Fulfilling Demetrio’s Legacy: The Vancouver Home
The house was particularly significant to the Bublé family. Demetrio had originally built the ranch-style house in the 1970s “with his own two hands,” and it held many treasured memories for Michael, who spent much of his childhood there.
Upon his passing, Demetrio’s “greatest wish” was not just that the house would remain in the family, but that it would specifically become Minette’s home. This generous act would allow her to live rent-free and lessen the financial burden of supporting her family abroad.
The Transformation and Emotional Reveal
To execute this final wish, Michael Bublé teamed up with twin hosts Drew and Jonathan Scott on Celebrity IOU in 2020. While Minette was away visiting family in the Philippines, Bublé and the “Property Brothers” stars completely renovated the 1970s-era house, transforming it into a modern, open-concept home with a brand new kitchen and updated amenities. Bublé even got his hands dirty helping with the demolition.
In the emotional reveal, Bublé led a tearful Minette into the newly transformed home and shared his grandfather’s message:
“My grandfather, his greatest wish was not just that this house was kept in the family, but that this would be your home because he loved you so much. And so, this is all for you.”
Minette was brought to tears by the generosity, saying, “It is so much, really, really so much. I have no words right now. It hasn’t sunk in yet. It’s beautiful.” The gift stands as a powerful testament to the genuine love and respect shared between the Bublé family and the woman who dedicated years to caring for their patriarch.
