It was a historic night for United States figure skater Alysa Liu. Entering the women\u2019s free skate final in third place following the short program, Liu delivered a remarkable performance to finish with a composite score of 226.79, enough to secure gold \u2014 the first U.S. woman to win a singles\u00a0figure skating\u00a0Olympic gold in 24 years.<\/p>\n

Liu remained composed throughout her skate and while watching the two competitors who followed her. She made it clear beforehand that a medal wouldn\u2019t define her, and she used that mindset to relieve pressure, executing a near flawless performance on the biggest stage of her Olympic career.<\/p>\n

Following the dramatic finish, former Olympic gold medalist and current NBC Sports analyst Scott Hamilton shared a message of praise on social media:<\/p>\n

\u201cWHAT. A. NIGHT!!!!\u201d Hamilton wrote. \u201cCongratulations Alysa Liu on the greatest achievement of our sport. You deserve it, and you\u2019re a true inspiration.<\/p>\n
