Kelly Clarkson\u00a0has all treats, no tricks in store for those tuning in to\u00a0The Kelly Clarkson Show<\/em>\u00a0on Friday, Oct. 31.<\/p>\n

PEOPLE was on set for the taping of the Emmy Award-winning daytime show\u2019s 2025 Halloween installment, which was designed as a tribute to the iconic murder mystery movies of the 1940s that helped define one of Hollywood\u2019s most celebrated and recognizable genres.<\/p>\n

Like those film noir classics, the episode begins in black and white, with Clarkson standing center stage in front of her band to sing her latest\u00a0Kellyoke\u00a0pick.<\/p>\n

All are dressed in period garb \u2014 Clarkson in a gorgeous gown and her band, My Band Y\u2019all, led by musical director and keyboardist Jason Halbert, in formal white dinner jackets typical of musical acts at the time.<\/p>\n

But seconds later, the reference to the curly blonde wig she\u2019s wearing hits as the\u00a0American Idol<\/em>\u00a0champ begins singing a cover of \u201cSooner or Later,\u201d Stephen Sondheim\u2019s Oscar-winning jazz ballad sung by\u00a0Madonna\u00a0in the 1990 neo-noir pastiche\u00a0Dick Tracy.<\/em><\/p>\n

Channeling the Queen of Pop, Clarkson, 43, mimics the character\u2019s seductive delivery before letting her signature belt soar on the tune\u2019s top notes. \u201cI\u2019m not an actress,\u201d she later jokes with guests Leanne Morgan and Lance Bass \u2014 though her performance could have fooled anyone.<\/p>\n

Speaking with PEOPLE about the performance, Halbert \u2014 who\u2019s had a front-row seat to Clarkson\u2019s voice for 22 years \u2014 says that while she made the song look easy, the number was anything but.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was probably one of the most complicated musical episodes we\u2019ve done in seven seasons,\u201d Halbert says, noting the layers Sondheim built into his composition. \u201cKelly shines in that big band standard era, and her control in the song is just unbelievable. A lot of people are really impressed when she hits the really high notes \u2014 and to be honest, that comes really naturally for her. I\u2019m more amazed when she brings you into this sultry, lower register. That\u2019s actually ten times harder to control than the bigger, impressive notes you get the standing ovations for.\u201d<\/p>\n
