Even though\u00a0Keith Urban\u00a0and\u00a0Miranda Lambert\u2018s \u2018We Were Us\u2018 debuted on the Aussie singer\u2019s recent album \u2018Fuse,\u2019 it actually has been years in the making.<\/span><\/p>\n

Urban tells\u00a0ABC News Radio that\u00a0the seed for duet was planted in 2005 when the talented Lambert\u00a0opened for him on tour. \u201cWe used to do a song every night during my set,\u201d he says. \u201cI always loved singing with her, and I thought our voices went really well together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Their voices went so well together that the planted seed or inkling of an idea sprouted into a full-blown necessity. It became clear to Urban that they needed to do a duet, but it needed to fit their voices perfectly \u2014 any old duet would just not do. He never gave up on looking for a song that would fit the bill, and when he heard \u2018We Were Us,\u2019 he knew it was the one.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just called her up and sent her the song, and she loved it. Her and\u00a0Blake\u00a0[Shelton] actually came to the studio and hung out for a few hours\u2026 We sang it together and it was done,\u201d the crooner recalls. \u00a0

Although Urban may not have anticipated the duet taking almost 10 years to find, it was definitely worth the wait. The two superstars\u00a0delivered their riveting song\u00a0at the 2013 CMA Awards, and everything from their onstage chemistry to the emotive lyrics came together for a memorable pairing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Hopefully this will be the first of many collaboration between Lambert and Urban, as the sassy songstress joked backstage at the CMA Awards that he owes her a guest appearance on her next CD, since \u2018We Were Us\u2019 appears on \u2018Fuse.\u2019 We, and probably every other country fan, think that\u2019s a brilliant idea.<\/p>\n
