At the time, TV fame and country credibility didn\u2019t always mix. \u201cPeople in Nashville told me straight up\u2014\u2018If you do this TV thing, country fans won\u2019t take you seriously anymore,\u2019\u201d Shelton recalled. \u201cThey thought I\u2019d lose my credibility.\u201d But for Shelton, the chance to try something new was too tempting to pass up.<\/p>\n

While America saw the fun, easygoing side of Shelton on TV, few realized the pressure behind the scenes. \u201cWe\u2019d tape all day, then I\u2019d go record all night,\u201d he said. \u201cThere were times I\u2019d cut vocals at 2 a.m. in a hotel room with a blanket over my head for soundproofing.\u201d It was a relentless schedule, with Shelton splitting his time between Los Angeles soundstages and Nashville recording studios.<\/p>\n

The payoff? Shelton became\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u2019s most successful coach, leading nine contestants to victory and helping define the show\u2019s identity. At the same time, he kept his music career blazing, scoring an incredible 30 No. 1 country hits\u2014including \u201cHoney Bee,\u201d \u201cGod\u2019s Country,\u201d and \u201cBoys \u2019Round Here.\u201d All of it happened while Shelton lived what he described as \u201ctwo full-time lives\u2014one as a TV guy, one as a country artist.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cost: Burnout and the Search for Balance<\/h3>\n

Success, Shelton says, came at a steep personal price. \u201cI almost burned out,\u201d he admitted. \u201cYou start running on fumes\u2026 I was always tired\u2014mentally, physically, creatively.\u201d By 2016, the pressure began to catch up with him. He found himself questioning what it was all for and realized he was \u201cspreading [himself] too thin.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was during these challenging years that Shelton found grounding through his relationship with Gwen Stefani, his fellow coach on\u00a0The Voice<\/em>. \u201cGwen grounded me,\u201d he said. \u201cShe reminded me that life isn\u2019t just about winning\u2014it\u2019s about enjoying what you\u2019ve already got.\u201d This new perspective encouraged him to slow down, spend more time in Oklahoma, and focus on the things that brought him happiness outside of the spotlight.<\/p>\n

Looking Back: The Gamble That Paid Off<\/h3>\n

Despite the long nights, exhaustion, and doubts, Shelton says he wouldn\u2019t change a thing. \u201cWinning nine seasons\u2014that\u2019s something I\u2019m proud of,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it came with sacrifice.\u201d The experience taught him how to adapt, balance chaos with gratitude, and, most importantly, trust his instincts even when others doubted him.<\/p>\n

When Shelton officially stepped away from\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u00a0in 2023, he did so on his own terms. \u201cI\u2019ve done my run. Now it\u2019s about slowing down, writing music again, and living life a little more off-camera.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking back, Shelton sums up his journey simply: \u201cEvery time I gambled\u2014whether it was a song, an album, or\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u2014I was scared. But every one of those risks gave me something I didn\u2019t know I needed.\u201d For the country singer who took a chance and won big in two worlds, the gamble wasn\u2019t just about music or TV\u2014it was about betting on himself, and proving that sometimes, you really can have it all.<\/p>\n

And as for those 30 No. 1 hits? \u201cI\u2019m just a guy from Oklahoma who got lucky,\u201d Shelton said. \u201cBut if there\u2019s one thing I\u2019ve learned, it\u2019s this: you can\u2019t win nine seasons or write 30 chart-toppers if you never take a risk.\u201d<\/p>\n
