Charlie\u2019s widow Erika wiped away tears as Trump handed her the highest civilian honor at a ceremony in the\u00a0White House<\/span>\u00a0Rose Garden on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u2018You have given him the best birthday gift he could ever have,\u2019 the mother of two said as Trump beamed at her.<\/p>\n

The president, who returned from a whirlwind Middle East peace mission late last night, said: \u2018I raced back halfway around the globe. I was going to call Erika and ask, \u201cCould you maybe move it to Friday?\u201d but I didn\u2019t have the courage to call.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018But you know why I didn\u2019t call? Because I heard today was Charlie\u2019s birthday.\u2019<\/p>\n

Kirk\u2019s parents were also in attendance for the ceremony despite remaining out of the public spotlight after their son\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

Friends and Turning Point employees also attended together with vice president\u00a0JD Vance<\/span>\u00a0and his wife Usha, Trump\u2019s son\u00a0Don Jr<\/span>\u00a0and conservative media\u00a0stars\u00a0Tucker Carlson<\/span>, Jesse Watters, Bill O\u2019Reilly, Sean Hannity, and\u00a0Laura Ingraham<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Erika, 36, fought back tears as she revealed she had asked their daughter \u2018what she would like to say to Daddy\u2019 on his birthday.<\/p>\n

\u2018And she said, \u201cHappy birthday Daddy, I want to give you a stuffed animal. I want to eat a cupcake with ice cream and I want you to come home for a birthday surprise. I love you.\u2019<\/p>\n

Trump praised Charlie for always believing that peace in the Middle East could be done.<\/p>\n

The president, who yesterday speculated on the afterlife as a reporter questioned him on Air Force One, said:\u00a0\u2018[Charlie] is gonna make heaven. I said, I\u2019m not sure I can make it. But he\u2019s gonna make it. He\u2019s there, looking down on us right now.\u2019<\/p>\n

Trump hailed Kirk\u2019s wisdom and activism in support of the conservative movement and his presidential campaign.<\/p>\n

\u2018Without him, who knows, maybe we would have Kamala standing here today. That would not be good,\u2019 he said, referring to his former presidential rival in the 2024 campaign.<\/p>\n

\u2018Everything he did was historic. A true evangelist with the cause of freedom and the word of almighty God.\u2019<\/p>\n

He compared Kirk to other people who were killed for their beliefs including Socrates, St. Peter, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr.<\/p>\n

\u2018He was a martyr for truth and for freedom,\u2019 Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Those who change history of the most he really did, have always risked their lives for causes they were put on Earth to defend.\u2019<\/p>\n

The president also paid a touching tribute to Erika, now the CEO of Charlie\u2019s Turning Point USA foundation that inspired young people across college campuses.<\/p>\n

\u2018I was with him before I met Erika. And he told me he was going to get married. He said, \u201cYou won\u2019t believe how beautiful she is,\u201d\u2018 Trump recounted.<\/p>\n

\u2018But then he also said, \u201cAnd you know what? She\u2019s like the smartest person I know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018See, they do go together on occasion. Not often. Not often. But on occasion, they go together,\u2019 he added as the crowd chuckled.<\/p>\n

After the ceremony, President Trump stood quietly with Erika and her parents as the United States Marine \u2018President\u2019s Own\u2019 band played Amazing Grace, before quietly departing the Rose Garden and entering the Oval Office.<\/p>\n

For the past month, senior members of the team rallied to Erika\u2019s side to help bolster Kirk\u2019s organization Turning Point USA, the conservative behemoth organization built to help motivate and inspire young people.<\/p>\n

Although the president\u2019s attention has been directed at the successful\u00a0Israeli<\/span>\u00a0peace deal with\u00a0Gaza<\/span>, he was determined to get back to the White House in time for Tuesday afternoon\u2019s ceremony.<\/p>\n

Kirk was fatally shot on September 10 while speaking at\u00a0Utah<\/span>\u00a0Valley University during the first stop of his campus speaking tour.<\/p>\n

Trump announced his intention to posthumously\u00a0award Kirk the nation\u2019s highest civilian honor during remarks at the Pentagon commemorating the 9\/11 attacks, just days after the assassination<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Kirk had built Turning Point USA into one of the most influential conservative youth organizations in America,\u00a0known for its campus activism and annual conferences that drew thousands of young conservatives<\/span>.<\/p>\n

After Kirk\u2019s death, Erika publicly delivered a statement vowing to carry on his work as the new CEO of the organization.<\/p>\n

Trump memorably eulogized Kirk at his memorial service days later and\u00a0comforted Erika who mourned the loss of her husband<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u2018We know the weight of this monumental loss is almost unbearable,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018But even in the midst of heartache and pain too great to even fathom, you have somehow found the strength and deep faith to be a comfort to millions and millions of people.\u2019<\/p>\n
