On May 9, Officer James Hurst, a new member of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department, responded to calls from residents who spotted the toddler in the Cuyler-Brownsville neighborhood. The boy was quickly brought to safety and taken to Memorial University Medical Center for evaluation.<\/p>\n
During the medical check, the little boy grew inconsolable, crying and trembling in fear. That\u2019s when Officer Hurst, who has a young son with Down Syndrome, asked quietly,\u00a0\u201cCan I hold him?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n He later described the moment:\u00a0\u201cThe boy, obviously being so small, became very upset. I picked him up, and minutes later, he was asleep on my chest. With all my body armor and gun belt, it became heavy, so I sat down on the bed and let him rest.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n For Hurst, the decision came not only from police training but from a father\u2019s heart.\u00a0\u201cThis job is so much more than just chasing the bad guys,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said.\u00a0\u201cIt is about serving the citizens of the communities you work in and doing what they need you to do.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Before joining the department, Hurst served as a U.S. Army Black Hawk crew chief. Yet he insists his actions at the hospital were nothing extraordinary.\u00a0\u201cI didn\u2019t run into a burning building. I was just there for a child.
