You know that split second when you can feel your partner about to do something outrageous, but your brain refuses to process it? That was me at Terminal C, baby wipes sticking out of my pocket, one twin strapped to my chest, the other gnawing on my sunglasses like a starved raccoon.<\/p>\n

It was our first real family trip: me, my husband Eric, and our 18-month-old twins, Ava and Mason, flying to Florida to see his parents in their pastel golf-cart kingdom. His dad has been FaceTiming so much that Mason now says \u201cPapa\u201d to every white-haired man in line at Target.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re juggling stroller-carseat-diaper-bag Tetris at the gate when Eric leans over and goes, \u201cI\u2019m just gonna check something real quick,\u201d and glides to the counter. Cute. Helpful, I think.<\/p>\n

Boarding starts. The agent scans his ticket and smiles like she\u2019s selling a luxury SUV. Eric turns to me with this smug little grin. \u201cBabe, I snagged an upgrade. I\u2019ll see you on the other side, okay? You\u2019ll be fine with the kids, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

I laugh, because that\u2019s\u2026 a joke, obviously.<\/p>\n

It is not a joke.<\/p>\n

He kisses my cheek and disappears behind the little curtain into Business Class like a traitor prince, while I\u2019m left in coach with two toddlers, a collapsing stroller, and a soul leaving my body.<\/p>\n

By the time I collapse into 32B, I\u2019m sweating through my hoodie, Ava is pounding her tray table like a club DJ, and Mason is testing the tensile strength of a stuffed giraffe. Apple juice baptizes my lap. The guy next to me asks the flight attendant to move because \u201cit\u2019s\u2026 noisy here,\u201d and honestly? Fair. I consider faking my own death.<\/p>\n

My phone buzzes. Eric: \u201cFood is amazing up here. They gave me a warm towel \ud83d\ude0d\u201d<\/p>\n

A warm towel, while I am wiping someone\u2019s spit-up with a floor rescue wipe. I stare at the message like it might apologize.<\/p>\n

Then a text from my father-in-law: \u201cSend me a video of my grandbabies flying like big kids!\u201d<\/p>\n

I film Ava DJ-ing, Mason chewing the giraffe like it owes him money, and me with the haunted eyes of a woman who could cry at an insurance commercial. I send it. He replies with a thumbs-up.<\/p>\n

When we land, I wrangle two overtired toddlers, three bags, and a stroller that now moves only in interpretive dance. Eric emerges from the good side of the curtain yawning and stretching like he just left a spa. \u201cMan, great flight. Did you try the pretz\u2014oh wait,\u201d he chuckles.<\/p>\n

At baggage claim, his dad beams, scoops up Ava, calls me \u201cchampion of the skies,\u201d then turns to Eric with a face that could curdle milk. \u201cSon\u2026 we\u2019ll talk later.\u201d<\/p>\n

After bedtime: \u201cEric. Study. Now.\u201d His dad doesn\u2019t yell; he doesn\u2019t have to. The door shuts. Muffled voices. \u201cYou think that was funny?\u201d \u201cIt wasn\u2019t a big\u2014\u201d \u201cYou left your wife with two toddlers\u2014\u201d \u201cShe said she could han\u2014\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s not the damn point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fifteen minutes later, my father-in-law emerges calm as a judge. He pats my shoulder. \u201cDon\u2019t worry, sweetheart. I took care of it.\u201d Eric slinks upstairs without making eye contact.<\/p>\n

The next night we go out to a waterfront place with white tablecloths and live jazz. The waiter takes drink orders. \u201cBourbon, neat,\u201d says my FIL. \u201cIced tea,\u201d says my MIL. He looks at me. \u201cSparkling?\u201d I nod gratefully. Then he turns to Eric, expression carved from granite.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd for him\u2026 a glass of milk. Since he clearly can\u2019t handle being an adult.\u201d<\/p>\n

The silence lasts exactly one second before my MIL giggles, the waiter bites his lip, and I nearly baptize the table in sparkling water. Eric goes very quiet and contemplates the bread basket like it contains answers.<\/p>\n

Two days later, while I\u2019m folding tiny T-shirts on the porch, my father-in-law leans on the railing. \u201cJust so you know,\u201d he says mildly, \u201cI updated the will. There\u2019s a trust for Ava and Mason. And you\u2019re taken care of. Eric\u2019s cut\u2026 shrinks a little every time he forgets what comes first.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reader, a man\u2019s priorities can sharpen overnight.<\/p>\n

At the airport home, Eric is suddenly the world\u2019s most helpful pack mule. \u201cI\u2019ll grab the car seats. Want Mason\u2019s bag? I\u2019ll get the gate check tags! Do you want a coffee? Two coffees?\u201d<\/p>\n

We check in. The agent prints our passes and pauses over his. \u201cOh! You\u2019ve been upgraded again, sir.\u201d She slides his boarding pass into a thick sleeve with something handwritten on the front. He blanches.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d I ask, bouncing Ava.<\/p>\n

He hands it to me. In bold black marker: \u201cBusiness class again. Enjoy. One-way. You\u2019ll explain it to your wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

I recognize the handwriting. I start laughing like a villain in a rom-com. \u201cYour dad did not\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did,\u201d Eric mutters. \u201cSaid I can \u2018relax in luxury\u2019\u2026 at the hotel I\u2019m checking into alone for a few days to \u2018think about priorities.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

I kiss the twins and shoulder past him toward economy, where the juice is warm and the tray tables are sticky but the company is excellent.<\/p>\n

At the gate, just before boarding, he leans in, cheeks pink. \u201cSo\u2026 any chance I can earn my way back to economy?\u201d<\/p>\n
