The flight from Bangkok feels endless, but the hug at Riverside Airport makes it worth it. Mom smells like rosemary oil and something else I can\u2019t place\u2014worry, maybe. On the drive through Millbrook, the streets look smaller, the houses more tired. She chatters about book club and neighbors and everything except the dark circles makeup can\u2019t hide.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made your favorite,\u201d she says when we pull in. \u201cPotato soup with\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExtra thyme,\u201d I finish, grinning.<\/p>\n

The grin dies in the doorway. The kitchen is a dish avalanche\u2014counters, boxes, even the windowsill stacked with plates. The faucet wheezes out a stingy trickle.<\/p>\n

\u201cA few weeks,\u201d she says to the floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cA professional.\u201d The word lands like a threat.<\/p>\n

For two weeks we wash dishes in the tub like medieval peasants. For two weeks she flinches whenever I go near the kitchen. She does three nightly patrols of every lock. \u201cI\u2019m fine,\u201d she lies over coffee. The air in the house feels wrong.<\/p>\n

When she goes for groceries, I make a decision.<\/p>\n

The u-bend loosens with a cough of mineral grit. My fingers meet something that isn\u2019t pipe\u2014plastic wrapped tight around something hard. I ease it out: a waterproof-wrapped flip phone and thick rolls of hundreds. Thirty thousand dollars sits in my palm, green and obscene.<\/p>\n

The front door slams.<\/p>\n

\u201cJeremy? I\u2019m\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

She rounds the corner and stops dead. Apples roll across the linoleum. \u201cOh God. Oh no.\u201d Her hands cover her face. \u201cWhy did you have to find it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhose money is this? And the phone?\u201d<\/p>\n

She drops into a chair, like a string got cut. \u201cI\u2019ve been lying to you your whole life.\u201d A breath. \u201cYou have a brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

My brain stutters. \u201cI\u2014what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a baby at seventeen. Before I met your father.\u201d Tears slick her cheeks. \u201cHis name is Gerard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI gave him up at five. I was alone. I was scared.\u201d She shakes her head. \u201cI never told your dad. Years passed. It got easier to pretend. Until six months ago\u2014he found me. We did a DNA test. At first I was so happy. Then he started asking for money. Then things went missing\u2014your dad\u2019s pocket watch, my grandmother\u2019s ring. Last month he showed up panicked, handed me the phone and the cash, told me to hide it, said people might come. Then he vanished.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of people?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d The terror in her eyes is old and fresh all at once.<\/p>\n

I power the flip phone up: 3% battery. The call log is a graveyard of unknown numbers and one contact: G. I call it from my phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah?\u201d a rough, tired voice says.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this Gerard?\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence. \u201cWho\u2019s asking?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Jeremy. Lisa\u2019s son.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another beat. Softer now: \u201cJeremy\u2026? You\u2019re my little brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

We meet at Murphy\u2019s Diner off Highway 9. He walks in and it\u2019s like seeing my face through a funhouse mirror: same dark hair, same stubborn jaw, harder angles. He slides into the booth.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look like her,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look like me,\u201d I say.<\/p>\n

He laughs, but it doesn\u2019t reach his eyes. Then he pulls out a badge.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a cop,\u201d he says. \u201cEastside PD. Undercover. I got in too deep with a crew moving drugs and laundering money. When they got suspicious, I had to disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo the cash\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEvidence. And my own savings. I needed Mom to stash it where no one would look. I took a couple things to keep cover. I was going to pay her back.\u201d He scrubs his face. \u201cI didn\u2019t tell her anything because the less she knew, the safer she was. The case wrapped last week. Arrests. Convictions. I was making sure it was really over.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe hid it in the pipes,\u201d I say. \u201cWe\u2019ve been bathing our dishes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He winces. \u201cI\u2019ll fix the sink. And tell her everything. I owe her that much.\u201d<\/p>\n

That night we sit around the kitchen table, the three of us. Gerard tells it again, slower, filling in the dark. Mom cries in a way that isn\u2019t just fear anymore\u2014it\u2019s release. \u201cI\u2019m sorry I gave you up,\u201d she whispers.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did what you had to,\u201d he says. \u201cSo did I.\u201d<\/p>\n

He replaces the elbow joint, tightens the collar nut, and for the first time in weeks water runs honest and strong. We wash dishes in their proper place, passing plates like we\u2019ve always done this.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what sticks with me: secrets are mushrooms; they love the dark and they grow fast on shame. But the truth is stubborn. It floats. Even when you cram it in the plumbing, it finds a way out.<\/p>\n

Sundays now, Gerard and I meet for coffee. Turns out having a brother is better than I imagined, especially one whose stories make my travel vlogs look like a trip to the corner store.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what\u2019s next?\u201d I ask last week.<\/p>\n

He actually grins, and this time it reaches his eyes. \u201cMaybe you teach me how to make one of those vlogs. I\u2019ve got some tales.\u201d<\/p>\n

I raise my cup. \u201cTo new beginnings.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd old recipes,\u201d he says, clinking mugs.<\/p>\n
