Playa Grande lifeguards claim they were \u201cnot present\u201d on the beach at the time of\u00a0Malcolm-Jamal Warner\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0death due to lack of \u201cresources.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe deeply regret the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner at Playa Grande. He was swept away by a strong rip current and died by drowning,\u201d the Caribbean Guard, Costa Rica\u2019s volunteer lifeguard association, said in a Monday, July 21, statement via\u00a0Facebook<\/a>. \u201cIt all happened very quickly, and although there were people on the beach who entered the water to rescue him, they did not arrive in time. He was pulled from underwater without vital signs, and despite CPR maneuvers being performed on the beach, resuscitation was unsuccessful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Guard added that Playa Grande, well known by \u201clocal surfers,\u201d is one of their \u201cmost challenging beaches,\u201d noting that there are signs in both Spanish and English \u201cwarning of the danger of death due to drowning.\u201d While the Guard has patrolled there \u201cover the past few years,\u201d they claimed that they were \u201cnot present\u201d at the time of Warner\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\u201cDue to recent aquatic incidents in Playa Negra, we had redirected resources there and to Chiquita, another iconic beach known for its strong currents,\u201d the statement claimed before appealing to Costa Rica\u2019s president,\u00a0Rodrigo Chaves Robles<\/strong>, and the government. \u201cFrom Caribbean Guard, a volunteer lifeguard association, we make an urgent appeal to the President of the Nation, the national government, the Municipality of Talamanca, and the entire Caribbean community to continue joining forces to minimize this problem, which, sadly, is on the rise ACROSS THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement alleged, \u201cWe do everything within our reach. We have saved numerous lives in recent years, and if Caribbean Guard didn\u2019t exist, the number of drownings would be counted in dozens. We give everything we have to minimize the risks, but without help from the government, clear public policies, and strong support from local business owners, this will continue to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

News broke earlier on Monday that\u00a0Warner died at the age of 54\u00a0after an accidental drowning. Costa Rican National Police told ABC News that\u00a0The Cosby Show<\/em>\u00a0star\u2019s official cause of death was\u00a0ruled as asphyxia, which occurs when an individual doesn\u2019t get enough oxygen in their body.<\/p>\n

Us Weekly<\/em>\u00a0later confirmed that the Costa Rican Red Cross was alerted to a water-related incident at Playa Grande, Cahuita, Lim\u00f3n, via the 9-1-1 emergency system on Sunday, July 20, at 2:10 p.m, and when authorities got the alert, three ambulances were dispatched to the scene.<\/p>\n

Warner\u2019s body has since been transferred from Lim\u00f3n to the Forensic Medicine Unit in San Joaqu\u00edn de Flores for an autopsy. Costa Rica\u2019s Judicial Investigation Department shared with\u00a0Us<\/i>\u00a0that a preliminary investigation showed that Warner \u201cappeared to have entered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the Red Cross, emergency personnel attended\u00a0to two adult male patients\u00a0at the scene. As of this publishing, a 35-year-old man who hasn\u2019t been identified was transported in critical condition to the local clinic and his current condition is unknown, while CPR was performed on Warner, who was declared dead at the scene. The spokesperson confirmed that both Warner and the second individual were \u201cinvolved in the same incident.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warner had been in Costa Rica since July 13. He is survived by his wife and daughter, whose identities were never revealed.<\/p>\n
