Blake Shelton Remembers Toby Keith Following His Death at 62: \u2018You Were the Toughest Man I Ever Met\u2019<\/h1>\n

The \u201cAustin\u201d singer remembered his late friend following his death on Monday<\/p>\n

Blake Shelton\u00a0is remembering friend and country icon\u00a0Toby Keith.<\/p>\n

After\u00a0Keith \u201cpassed peacefully\u201d at age 62\u00a0on Monday night, Shelton remembered the country icon on\u00a0X (formerly known as Twitter).<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though I knew about your battle these last few months I still never imagined this day. Anyone who knew you knows what I mean,\u201d wrote the 47-year-old singer on Tuesday. \u201cYou were the toughest man I ever met.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you brother for being a friend, a hero and an inspiration. There will never be another Toby Keith,\u201d concluded the fellow Oklahoma native.<\/p>\n

During the\u00a02023 People\u2019s Choice Country Awards\u00a0last September, Shelton presented Keith with the country music icon award.<\/p>\n

At the time, Keith told PEOPLE that he had known Shelton \u201cforever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI took him out when I first got headliner status early on and I was his first big tour he got,\u201d said the late musician.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe lived in Oklahoma, so we\u2019re kindred spirits, a lot alike,\u201d Keith added. \u201cWe have fun together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with Shelton, several more country\u00a0music stars mourned the loss of the icon\u00a0\u2014 including\u00a0Carrie Underwood,\u00a0Dolly Parton,\u00a0Jason Aldean,\u00a0Old Dominion,\u00a0Luke Bryan,\u00a0Jelly Roll,\u00a0Zach Bryan,\u00a0Dan + Shay\u00a0and\u00a0Luke Combs, as well as\u00a0Reba McEntire\u00a0and\u00a0Chuck Wicks.<\/p>\n

McEntire\u00a0told PEOPLE, \u201cWe\u2019re going to miss him so much, not only as a friend but a fellow performer and person in the music business and from Oklahoma.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut he doesn\u2019t have to fight anymore, and he doesn\u2019t have to hurt anymore,\u201d the 68-year-old singer added. \u201cI hope one day to get to see him up in Heaven. Thank God we have his wonderful music to keep us company, even though he\u2019s not here on earth with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019m like any other fan, right? I love Toby Keith. I loved his music, grew up with his music,\u201d\u00a0Wicks, 44, told PEOPLE\u00a0on Tuesday. \u201cHe was always bigger than life. And I think that\u2019s what people loved about him so much is, he\u2019s this big guy up there, bigger than life guy singing hit song after hit song.\u201d<\/p>\n
