Since making his debut in 2001 with the massive hit single \u201cAustin,\u201d he has launched dozens of singles to the top of the country chart. Not content to be an A-list musician, Shelton has also spent more than a decade as a coach on\u00a0<em>The Voice<\/em>\u00a0and has several more film and TV roles under his belt. However, he hasn\u2019t forgotten the songs that helped put him where he is today.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>Recently, Shelton visited the American Songwriter studio. While there, he took some time to break out his guitar and perform an intimate acoustic version of one of his earliest hits, \u201cThe Baby.\u201d Introducing the song, he said, \u201cI had this song on my album, which was my second studio album called The Dreamer. I always thought this was a well-written song, and it was the first single off the album. It topped the\u00a0<em>Billboard<\/em>\u00a0Hot Country Songs chart for three weeks and helped bolster the sales of his sophomore album. However, he removed the song from his setlist more than a decade ago. He only started playing it again during his Back to the Honky Tonk Tour last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know that I\u2019ve ever listened to or even sang a song that was more painful to get through than \u2018The Baby.\u2019 It\u2019s so freaking honest\u2013it\u2019s unbelievable,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/artists\/Blake-shelton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told\u00a0<em>Genius<\/em><\/a><em>.\u00a0<\/em>\u201cIt\u2019s like a sore spot. This guy took his mother for granted. Maybe we\u2019re all a little bit guilty of that. I was the baby of my family, and the only thing about this song I can\u2019t relate to is that my mother is still alive, thank God,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI actually stopped performing it at my concerts because I\u2019d get the crowd going and it\u2019d be a party. Then, I\u2019d sing this one and you\u2019d see people bawling out in the audience,\u201d he said. Shelton added that the song killed the mood of his shows. Recently, though, he had a change of heart.<\/p>\n<p>During the opening night of his tour, Shelton told the crowd that he decided to add \u201cThe Baby\u201d back to his setlist. \u201cI realized that it was a mistake to stop doing it back in the day because that\u2019s just the power of country music when a song connects with people.\u201d<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"article-title \/\/ a-font-primary-bold-xxl u-padding-t-075@tablet\">Blake Shelton Announces New Album \u2018For Recreational Use Only\u2019: Here\u2019s When It\u00a0Arrives<\/h1>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">Blake Shelton\u00a0is set to release his new album,\u00a0<em>For Recreational Use Only<\/em>, on May 9. The project will mark Shelton\u2019s first album under BBR Music Group\/BMG Nashville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">The dozen-song album spotlights songs from several top-shelf country songwriters, including Sarah Buxton, Zach Crowell, Greylan James, Shane McAnally, Pat McLaughlin and Bobby Pinson.
