Jamal Roberts\u00a0performed as part of the Top 8 on Season 23 of\u00a0American Idol<\/em>\u00a0during the Monday, May 5, episode, but before he took the stage, he had some news to share with viewers.<\/p>\n

The dad of two welcomed his third child during his rehearsals for the judge\u2019s song contest. \u201cI did have a beautiful baby girl,\u201d he shared. \u201cIt was so personal to me, I did not share it. But I have a healthy, beautiful, baby girl that was born today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jamal is also dad to daughters Harmoni and Lyrik, who were in the audience watching his performance. His newborn baby is Gianna Grace Roberts.<\/p>\n

For his Top 8 performance, Jamal sang \u201cI Believe\u201d by\u00a0Fantasia, which he said he \u201cconnected\u201d with in a different way. \u201cRight now, where I stand in this competition, it\u2019s love that I feel lifting me higher, for real,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s the love from my hometown, from my kids.\u201d The song was chosen by judge\u00a0Lionel Richie, although Jamal initially guessed that\u00a0Carrie Underwood\u00a0was the one who selected it.<\/p>\n

Jamal was in the Top 6 after the viewers\u2019 votes were counted, which meant he automatically moved on. The bottom two artists, Mattie Pruitt and Josh King, were in danger of going home. After tying to win the judge\u2019s song contest,\u00a0Luke Bryan\u00a0and Richie had to pick one of them to save and move forward, and they went with Mattie, which meant that Josh was eliminated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
