The coach of a Texas high school jock that was allegedly stabbed to death by Karmelo Anthony sobbed as he recalled realizing the teen \u201cwas gone\u201d just moments after the knifing.<\/p>\n

Victim Austin Metcalf\u2019s family\u00a0was brought to tears\u00a0as Frisco track and football coach Robert Starr recounted seeing a \u201ccommotion\u201d at the Kuykendall Stadium on April 2, 2025, and going over to where the 17-year-old was on the ground,\u00a0NBC 5 reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis face is purple, and he has a big hole in his chest,\u201d Starr testified at the first day of the murder trial against Anthony.<\/p>\n

Anthony, now 19, is accused of stabbing Metcalf in the chest with a foldable knife over a dispute that began after Metcalf asked Anthony to move out from under his team\u2019s tent.<\/p>\n

Starr began to sob as he\u00a0described going over to where\u00a0trainers were trying to revive Metcalf before Metcalf\u2019s twin, Hunter, pleaded with Starr to \u201cdo something,\u201d as he pointed toward Anthony.<\/p>\n

Starr went over to where Anthony was \u2014 but others told the upset coach to leave.<\/p>\n

When Starr returned to Metcalf, everyone was praying and Starr and Hunter got on their knees and also prayed, he recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just knew Austin was gone,\u201d the coach said.<\/p>\n

The next day, Starr sent a text to Metcalf saying, \u201cI love you man. Sorry I didn\u2019t say enough,\u201d according to exhibits shown to the jury.<\/p>\n

Mecalf\u2019s dad, Jeff, wiped his eyes as the messages were shown.<\/p>\n

The incident unfolded after Austin, a student at Frisco Memorial High School, told Anthony, who attended Frisco Centennial High School, to move away from their team area.<\/p>\n

The pair allegedly shoved each other before Anthony stabbed Metcalf, a move he claims he\u00a0made in self-defense.<\/p>\n

Starr told the jury that he\u2019d tasked Anthony \u2013 who was a discus and shot put thrower, as well as a football player \u2013 and a few other teammates with leading that day, which meant setting up the tent and moving equipment.<\/p>\n

The coach explained that the tent \u201cmarks your spot\u201d and said you don\u2019t go under other team\u2019s tents.<\/p>\n

Athletic trainer Tiffany Whiteaker took the stand next, telling the jury about performing CPR while her partner did chest compressions until medics arrived.<\/p>\n

Once he was given a transfusion, some color returned to Metcalf\u2019s face which Whiteaker said gave her false hope \u2014 which was dispelled after she saw his chest wound.<\/p>\n

Vincent Hooper, a coach from another school, told jurors next about holding Anthony to ensure he didn\u2019t leave.<\/p>\n

Hooper said Anthony told him, \u201cHe put his hands on me. I stabbed him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, if he dies, you\u2019ve changed your whole life,\u201d Hooper said,\u00a0according to a\u00a0report by the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n

The then 17-year-old didn\u2019t believe Metcalf was going to die, Hooper recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not going to die,\u201d Hooper said Anthony told him.<\/p>\n

After the altercation, Anthony was told, \u201cYou know, if he dies, you\u2019ve changed your whole life.\u201dFOX 4 NEWS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cBut if he does\u2026\u201d Hooper replied, prompting Anthony to start crying, he recalled.<\/p>\n

Despite not knowing each other, the pair hugged, Hooper said.<\/p>\n

The coach then called over Anthony\u2019s coaches, he said.<\/p>\n

Hooper also testified he had to stop another of Austin\u2019s teammate from attacking Anthony.<\/p>\n

During opening statements, Anthony\u2019s lawyer, Mike Howard, told the jury that a much larger Metcalf started the dispute with Anthony and that the knifing was purely to protect himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s important to know is Melo is 5 foot 8 and 140 pounds. Hunter and Austin Metcalf are 6 foot 1 about 80 pounds heavier than Melo,\u201d Howard claimed.<\/p>\n

Anthony \u201cremained seated, even when Austin and Hunter stood up,\u201d the defense attorney said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is uncontroverted that Austin makes the first physical contact. Austin grabs, punches, pushes. In that split second, Melo has a decision to make \u2014 how and when to act,\u201d the defense attorney said.<\/p>\n

But prosecutor Bill Wirskye told the jurors in his opening statements that Anthony carried out the \u201csenseless\u201d crime before ditching the knife and trying to flee the stadium.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re scared and running away in\u00a0self-defense, why toss the knife?\u201d Wirskye said.<\/p>\n
