He worked every single day to live up to that standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CBS News editor-in-chief addresses Scott Pelley's firing\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bfel181CADs\" width=\"350\" height=\"235\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-origwidth=\"350\" data-origheight=\"235\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-5\"><\/div>\n<p>The segment then cut to a montage highlighting Pelley\u2019s distinguished career. It featured footage of him reporting from Ground Zero during the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, where he remained for days covering the efforts of first responders. The tribute also showcased his work reporting from the front lines of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as his willingness to travel to dangerous hotspots around the world in pursuit of the truth. And more than 50 Emmy awards along the way. He was, in some ways, a man from another era, and that\u2019s not a knock. He didn\u2019t watch the competition, he said, because he knew who he was. A journalist who valued truth at all costs. And always kept alive the memory of colleagues killed in the field,\u201d said Dokoupil. \u201cA reminder that his chosen line of work could be a dangerous one. But Pelley also made one major break from the past. He changed the signs around here. Under the CBS Evening News logo, where Scott Pelley\u2019s own name would have been, he instead wrote \u2018The\u00a0<em>CBS Evening News<\/em>\u00a0with all of us.\u2019 Well, Scott, from all of us, thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/tony-dokoupil-1-1014x570.jpg\" alt=\"CBS Evening News' Ratings Report: How's Tony Dokoupil Doing After 5 Months?\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dokoupil was brought in by\u00a0Bari Weiss\u00a0to anchor the\u00a0<em>CBS Evening News<\/em>. Weiss, who was appointed editor-in-chief of CBS News, selected the former\u00a0<em>CBS Mornings<\/em>\u00a0host to spearhead a major programming overhaul of the network. The editorial overhaul under Weiss has faced internal friction. Recent shakeups have seen the departure of longtime\u00a0<em>60 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0veterans including Pelley,\u00a0Sharyn Alfonsi, and\u00a0Cecilia Vega.<\/p>\n<p>Pelley was fired following a reported\u00a0confrontation\u00a0with the show\u2019s new executive producer,\u00a0Nick Bilton, during a staff meeting. As per the\u00a0New York Times,\u00a0Bilton told staff that CBS News editor-in-chief\u00a0Bari Weiss\u00a0\u201cloves\u00a0<em>60 Minutes<\/em>,\u201d to which Pelley responded, \u201cShe\u2019s murdering\u00a0<em>60 Minutes<\/em>. She does not love this place; she was brought in to kill it and is doing exactly that.\u201d Pelley was reported to have told Bilton he had \u201cslender qualifications\u201d for his post, saying he would \u201cnever be welcomed there,\u201d and then criticized Weiss\u2019 takeover of\u00a0<em>CBS Evening News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>After Bilton\u2019s termination letter, Pelley responded, \u201cFor my part, new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story.\u201d Pelley did not identify which story he was referring. A CBS spokesman responded with\u00a0the statement,\u00a0\u201cThere is no political interference at CBS News, not from ownership, not from Bari Weiss. The only \u2018interference\u2019 is the normal back and forth between editor and correspondent that happens at every newsroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0statement\u00a0released after his firing, Pelley accused the new bosses of CBS News of trying to win favor with President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0and that\u00a0<em>60 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0\u201clost its DNA\u201d due to the \u201cincompetence and unprofessionalism in the new management\u201d that has \u201cwreaked havoc\u201d on the show. He concluded his statement by writing, \u201cI am deeply moved by the thousands of wishes we have received to \u2018keep up the good fight.\u2019 Most of the men and women of CBS News are still in that fight. But now the collapse of values at the top has become untenable. The leadership of\u00a0<em>60 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0is no longer recognizable.
