You always made the time\/You got me on my way\u201d sings\u00a0Michael Bubl\u00e9<\/strong>, in \u201cMother,\u201d the luminous song on his new album\u00a0Higher<\/em>.<\/p>\n

An anthem to all mothers, the poignant lyrics continue: \u201cAlways there by my side no matter what I am going through\/And there\u2019s no other, the place where we take cover\/And I know everybody\u2019s saying they got the best one\/But that ain\u2019t true. \u2018Cause I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Long before Bubl\u00e9 was a teen singing in nightclubs, or an international sensation performing in packed arenas and selling over 75 million records, his mother, Amber, was playing a monumental role in his\u00a0life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat woman is everything to me,\u201d says the multi-platinum singer-songwriter and producer from Burnaby, British Columbia, \u201cShe\u2019s a pillar of strength for all of us and the matriarch of our\u00a0family.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, the father of three with another on the way sees parallels with his own wife,\u00a0Luisana Lopilato<\/strong>, an actress and model. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting because I look at my wife and realize that I married a woman with so many of the same qualities. Lu is the leader of our family too.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Bubl\u00e9 recorded \u201cMother\u201d and thought of his own mother, the experience was profoundly emotional for him. He also saw the universality of the song. \u201cI didn\u2019t want it to just be about me. I wanted people to be able to be the protagonist in the song. It could be about your relationship with your kids, your mom or your your pup, if you don\u2019t have a human kid,\u201d he observes.<\/p>\n

When he presented the song to his own mother, he told her it might not make it onto\u00a0Higher<\/em>\u00a0because he had written another song that he now liked better. And he said she replied, \u201c\u2019Oh, Michael, crush me. Tell me, please that it\u2019s going to make the record.\u2019\u201d He ended up having a change of heart. \u201cI\u2019m glad I did,\u201d says Bubl\u00e9.<\/p>\n

The golden-voiced artist has a lot to make him very glad these days. In addition to the joy of family, his single \u201cI\u2019ll Never Not Love You\u201d is topping the Billboard charts. He\u2019s also embarking on a multi-city global tour in support of\u00a0Higher<\/em>. And he has a new fragrance,\u00a0Michael Bubl\u00e9 By Invitation, that recently debuted. The scent and packaging, which Bubl\u00e9 had a major hand creating, is a blend of rose, peony, wild jasmine and lily of the valley.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been in this for 20 years and it means a lot to me to have a hit again. I never take it for granted,\u201d says the maestro of the American Songbook. \u201cWith COVID and the health of my son, five or six of the last 10 years were kind of gone for me. So, it feels really good to be back. It\u2019s a little like a renaissance.\u201d<\/p>\n

And this Mother\u2019s Day and every day what\u2019s really important becomes ever clearer to him. These lifetime lessons raise him up.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother showed me by her actions, the same way that my wife does. They show that kindness, goodness and empathy are the way to lead,\u201d he shares. \u201cI watch her teach our children through her actions, the same way my mother taught me and my sisters. I\u2019m grateful for that sense of stability and faith that she instilled in us. Because when you are given unconditional love, you\u2019re given a gift of being able to return it.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is it like to create a fragrance?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am very proud of it. It was a fun journey for me to take because it was a lovely challenge. My manager asked, \u201cWould you like to do a fragrance line?\u201d And I said, \u201cI would not. Thank you very much, but no\u00a0thank you. I\u2019m not slapping my name on something.\u201d But my manager said, \u201cwell, what if you could be part of creating it?\u201d
\nI met with the perfumers and sat with the chemists for a couple days and worked really hard to come up with something I thought was amazing. I drove the company crazy because I changed all the packaging. I named it. It meant a lot to me to create something that makes me proud. It\u2019s a lovely fragrance and I love when I\u2019m out and actually smell people wearing it. I\u2019ll ask someone, \u201cwhat are you wearing?\u201d and they\u2019ll say, \u201cit\u2019s yours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why do you think mothers will like your fragrance for Mother\u2019s Day?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a unique, pretty, understated and quality fragrance. It makes a nice and thoughtful gift. Actually, Mother\u2019s Day\u00a0gifts\u00a0are really hard for me. I\u2019m thinking, what am I going to get my sisters, my wife, my mom? I understand why it\u2019s hard to find the right gifts. I\u2019m looking for things that are thoughtful, that aren\u2019t overboard but are not underwhelming either. My wife and mom like when I give them like T-shirts or sweaters with pictures of our kids on it.<\/p>\n

How has being a father and husband changed you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I imagine I\u2019m far more present and settled. I make decisions for different reasons. I have a much clearer sense of who I am and what\u2019s important to me. And that clarity has helped me to write better\u00a0music. I\u2019ve become very comfortable with being myself. I don\u2019t know if that could have come without time. There is nothing better than getting on stage in front of thousands of people, being comfortable in your skin and genuinely being grateful to be there.<\/p>\n

What is your ideal day with your family?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It starts with a nice\u00a0coffee\u00a0and being in bed with the kids. And then we\u2019ll go out and do something fun with the family, keeping the kids active. After we come home, have a nice healthy dinner and put the kids to bed. It ends with us watching\u00a0Netflix. That would be our perfect day.<\/p>\n

Usually, my wife wants to watch a movie where the cover of the movie is two people kissing. And then I say, \u201cI want to watch an\u00a0action movie.\u201d And she says, \u201cno, we\u2019re going to watch the\u00a0romantic\u00a0movie.\u201d And then she falls asleep in 15 minutes.
