Even his rider has described him as lazy, but the horse delivered in his biggest start yet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-5\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"7MIT7VF7XJGBBPFJIDTRWPUAMM\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">In an interview on\u00a0TODAY, host Craig Melvin asked DeVaux whether she considers herself a trailblazer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"GDQRRKYVLNDELL7J3NM6MUTXLI\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">\u201cNo, I consider myself a horse trainer and I just happen to be a female,\u201d she said. \u201cBut, you know, it\u2019s quite an honor to be the first female trainer to win a Kentucky Derby.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"7JWTAAWUSVGL5JYBQCQXXFY5WU\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">DeVaux is also just the second to win a Triple Crown race, joining Jena Antonucci, who won at the 2023 Belmont Stakes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2SUKHLJSPZAX3LFWFVCDLKUFDY\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">DeVaux trains at\u00a0Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, and comes from a family with deep roots in Standardbred racing. She grew up riding horses and said she wanted a career that would allow her to afford the expensive hobby.<\/p>\n<p id=\"BIMMP7AXERC4ZD2WURSPCEPZ64\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">After college, DeVaux worked as a stable employee for Saratoga trainer Chuck Simon before becoming an assistant trainer for Chad Brown, the two-time Preakness Stakes-winning trainer from Mechanicville, New York. She spent eight years working under Brown before earning her trainer\u2019s license in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkupstate.com\/resizer\/v2\/52HSAOJU25HPPCT67JB2V7GV7A.jpg?auth=9f7538e63afff2e04825d07de8f5697a506aa2e2ce2738ea90a31d1126bc43fa&amp;width=1280&amp;smart=true&amp;quality=90\" alt=\"Saratoga Springs native Cherie DeVaux wins 2026 Kentucky Derby - newyorkupstate.com\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"77JH5BF7ZNHUPKOVFY2CYVR32I\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">DeVaux has more than $30 million in career earnings and 272 wins through Dec. 17, 2025.<\/p>\n<p id=\"YJYZ7T6TINACJMDZVSVR3OBD3U\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">As of publication, a decision had not been made on whether Golden Tempo will race next in the\u00a0Preakness Stakes on May 16.
