Beginning in 1875, it is the longest continuously running sport in the United States. The one-and-a-quarter-mile race lasts approximately 2 minutes and is often referred to as \u201cthe most exciting two minutes in sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite how quickly the actual race unfolds, the annual event is surrounded by tradition, pageantry, and live performances. For most of the last decade, talented women in country music have been invited to do the honors. Past performers include\u00a0Wynonna Judd\u00a0(2024),\u00a0Carly Pearce\u00a0(2023), and Brittany Spencer (2022), among others.<\/p>\n<p>The Derby has strong ties to Southern roots, aligned with its Kentucky heritage. This year, the Florida-based blues and rock group, Tedeschi Trucks Band, performed the anthem, a slight change of course compared to recent years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"HtM5LVcD\"><\/div>\n<p>Led by married couple Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, the group recently released their sixth studio album,\u00a0<em>Future Soul<\/em>, and kicked off a North American tour.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img class=\"wp-image-165105 perfmatters-lazy entered exited\" \/>Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks (Getty Images for RRHOF, Maya Dehlin Spach\/WireImage)<\/figure>\n<p>Ahead of the big day, Mike Anderson, president of Churchill Downs Racetrack, shared:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cTedeschi Trucks Band\u2019s soulful sound and remarkable vocal presence make them an exciting addition to this year\u2019s Kentucky Derby. We\u2019re thrilled to welcome them to Churchill Downs and know their performance will capture the energy, emotion, and spirit that define Derby Day.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Accompanied by just an electric guitar, the duo gave a bluesy twist on \u201cThe Star Spangled Banner\u201d while still maintaining the spirit of the original.
