Country singer\u00a0Toby Keith, known for hits such as \u201cRed Solo Cup\u201d and \u201cShould Have Been a Cowboy,\u201d has died. He was 62.<\/p>\n

The singer-songwriter \u201cpassed peacefully\u201d on Monday night, his family\u00a0shared in a statement posted on social media. Keith\u00a0was diagnosed with stomach cancer\u00a0in the fall of 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cToby Keith passed peacefully last night on Feb. 5 surrounded by his family, the statement read. \u201cHe fought his fight with grace and courage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease respect the privacy of his family at this time,\u201d the message concluded.<\/p>\n

The musician was born Toby Keith Covel on July 8, 1961 in Oklahoma and raised on a farm outside of Oklahoma City, according to the\u00a0Songwriters Hall of Fame. Before focusing solely on pursuing music professionally, the lifelong country music fan worked as a rodeo hand in high school and\u00a0oil fields after he graduated, all the while performing in bars at night.<\/p>\n

During that time in which he played with a band called Easy Money, he met his wife of nearly 40 years,\u00a0Tricia Lucus, and they were married in 1984 after three years of dating. After they were wed, Keith adopted Lucus\u2019 daughter who was born in 1980, Shelley Covel Rowland, and the two welcomed two more children, daughter Krystal in 1985 and son Stelen in 1997.<\/p>\n

Following a period in which the star played minor league football and performed on the honky-tonk circuit, he secured a solo record deal in the early \u201890s and found breakthrough success with his No. 1 hit 1993 single \u201cShould\u2019ve Been a Cowboy,\u201d per\u00a0Oklahoma Hall of Fame. The song became the most-played song on country radio of the decade, and his self-titled debut album was certified platinum.<\/p>\n

His success continued throughout the decade and into the early \u201800s with\u00a0hits\u00a0like 1999\u2019s \u201cHow Do You Like Me Now?!\u201d and 2000\u2019s \u201cYou Shouldn\u2019t Kiss Me Like This,\u201d among others. Collaborations such as his 1996\u00a0 song with\u00a0Sting, \u201cI\u2019m So Happy I Can\u2019t Stop Crying,\u201d and his 2003 team-up with\u00a0Willie Nelson\u00a0\u201cBeer for My Horses,\u201d also led to crossover appeal.<\/p>\n

The \u201cWho\u2019s Your Daddy?\u201d singer\u2019s honky-tonk and country-rock songs about the cowboy lifestyle and patriotism helped him to resonate with fans and be among the top artists of the genre. He\u00a0received\u00a0the coveted entertainer of the year award five times throughout his career at the ACM Awards, was eventually honored by the organization with the prestigious Merle Haggard spirit award in 2021 and was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2015) and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (2021).<\/p>\n

Keith had controversies over the years, including a public tussle with\u00a0Natalie Maines\u00a0of\u00a0The Chicks\u00a0who was critical of the 2002 single \u201cCourtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),\u201d released several months after the events of September 11, per\u00a0Biography. He also clashed with country singer\u00a0Kris Kristofferson, who allegedly spoke about an interaction the two shared in 2003 in a 2009\u00a0Rolling Stone\u00a0<\/em>profile.<\/p>\n

His celebrity also expanded beyond music when he opened the popular restaurant chain\u00a0I Love This Bar & Grill\u00a0in 2005, named for his 2003 hit \u201cI Love This Bar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Keith played for U.S. presidents including\u00a0George W Bush.\u00a0Barack Obama\u00a0and\u00a0Donald Trump. In 2021 he was also awarded the National Medal of the Arts by Trump.<\/p>\n

Keith spoke about his cancer diagnosis while attending the\u00a0People\u2019s Choice Country Awards\u00a0in\u00a0September 2023.<\/p>\n

The singer told\u00a0E! News\u00a0<\/em>at the time that his cancer struggle is \u201ca little bit of a roller coaster. You get good days and, you know, you\u2019re up and down, up and down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always zero to 60 and 60 to zero but I feel good today,\u201d he said on the red carpet where he was joined by his wife of nearly 40 years, Tricia Lucus.<\/p>\n

In December 2023, Keith played his first official headlining shows since he\u00a0revealed his cancer diagnosis\u00a0at Park MGM\u00a0in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey everybody! This is Toby Keith. It\u2019s been a while. You know what I\u2019ve been doing \u2014\u00a0been on the old rollercoaster, but Almighty\u2019s riding shotgun. He\u2019s letting me drive for some reason, but we\u2019re making a big announcement,\u201d said Keith in\u00a0a video shared to YouTube\u00a0announcing the shows. \u201cI\u2019m doing a little deal and thought I\u2019d start in the great Las Vegas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll be my first two shows. They\u2019re kind of rehab shows \u2014 get the band back in sync, get me rolling again,\u201d he added. \u201cFirst time in my whole life I\u2019ve been off over two years. I\u2019ve never been off a year in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough COVID and cancer, the old devil\u2019s been after me a little bit,\u201d Keith continued. \u201cI\u2019ve got him by the horns right now, so instead of just sitting around and waiting, we\u2019re gonna get the band back together.\u201d<\/p>\n
