Sakamoto competed at her first-ever\u00a0<strong>Junior Grand Prix<\/strong>\u00a0in Ostrava, Czechia, 13 years ago and was now back in the country\u2019s capital to bid farewell to an illustrious career that included four\u00a0Olympic medals and three world titles.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kaori SAKAMOTO (JPN) | Women Short Program | ISU World Championships Prague 2026 | #FigureSkating\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ma_bcKGaIls\" width=\"350\" height=\"235\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-origwidth=\"350\" data-origheight=\"235\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that time (in 2013), during the competition, I could see maybe some people dispersed in the audience, so today to be able to be at the world championships in Prague and have so many people in the audience, I felt a little bit of how far I came,\u201d Sakamoto told media, including Olympics.com. \u201cIt was a good feeling to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skating to\u00a0<strong>Sarah Brightman<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Andrea Bocelli<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<strong>\u201cTime to Say Goodbye\u201d<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>Milano Cortina 2026<\/strong>\u00a0silver medallist opened with a triple Lutz, and followed that up with a double Axel and triple flip-triple toe loop combo. The effort earned her\u00a0<strong>79.31<\/strong>\u00a0points \u2013 just a point under the personal best she scored at the 2022 Worlds en route to her first title.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2026%2F0325%2Fr1633872_1296x729_16%2D9.jpg\" alt=\"Kaori Sakamoto leads after short program at figure skating worlds - ESPN\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy performance on the whole, I\u2019m very satisfied with it,\u201d Sakamoto said. \u201cA week before I came here, I started getting clean skates every day in training, so the performance today reflected what I was able to do in training, so I\u2019m very, very satisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sakamoto was not the only skating veteran in the top three in Prague. USA\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Amber Glenn<\/strong>\u00a0made her Junior Grand Prix debut at the same 2013 competition as Sakamoto, and here she lies third after the short program with\u00a0<strong>72.65<\/strong>\u00a0points.<\/p>\n<p>Sitting in podium position alongside her long-time friend, 26-year-old Glenn was equally nostalgic about returning to Czechia after all those years, now in a very different status as the Olympic team champion and three-time national champion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaori has been an incredible example of showing that you can be one of the top skaters for a long period of time and do it in a healthy way,\u201d Glenn said. \u201cFor so many years I idolised her, and to be here with her and at these competitions for the last couple of years has been very exciting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see each other at these times, and to see the success over the years has been a tribute to how hard we\u2019ve worked to keep healthy and to do this in the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Sakamoto, Glenn has not spoken of plans to wrap up her career. Still, her opening skate in Prague also had a deeper significance.<\/p>\n<p>Eager to have a re-do of her short program after Milano Cortina 2026, where an invalid element dropped her down to 13th place, it was a determined Glenn who stepped out on the ice in Prague on Wednesday afternoon. And while it was not the smoothest of skates \u2013 Glenn hung on to her triple Axel and also looked tense in her following jumps \u2013 but still a solid bid for her first world championship medal.<\/p>\n<p>Also looking for a comeback story after finishing fourth at\u00a0Milano Cortina 2026, Japan\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Chiba\u00a0Mone<\/strong>\u00a0was thrilled to score a personal best of\u00a0<strong>78.45<\/strong>\u00a0for her spirited\u00a0<strong>\u201cLast Dance\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0short.<\/p>\n<p>Chiba had solid jump sequences, landing a triple flip-triple toe loop, double Axel and triple Lutz, to rise to second place. But it was not the technical elements that made her most proud, but rather the signature hair swish that she does towards the skate\u2019s finale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe combination jump and the last Lutz, the last jump, all were pretty successful ever since I came to Prague,\u201d the 2025 Worlds bronze medallist said. \u201cBut the moment that I would give as my highlight would be at the end, when I\u2019m doing my neck twirling. Levito scored\u00a0<strong>72.16<\/strong>\u00a0for her efforts, but missed some points for not reaching top levels on two spins and one step sequence.<\/p>\n<p>Belgium\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Nina Pinzarrone<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 seventh at the world championships in Boston last year \u2013 looks to improve on this result after delivering a clean skate to\u00a0<strong>Susan Boyle<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<strong>\u201cSend in the Clowns\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>She landed a double\u00a0Axel and triple loop, and while her triple Lutz-triple toe loop was shaky, it got the green light from the judges and scored her top points, as did her spins and step sequences. But after a stellar season, which included a bronze medal at Milano Cortina 2026, the 17-year-old was expected to be one of the top medal contenders.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese skater could still climb up in the\u00a0free skate, but losing points on the biggest jump in her arsenal \u2013 the triple Axel \u2013 was a costly mistake. Usually solid on this high-scoring element, Nakai doubled it in Prague and also had a two-footed landing, which trimmed off more points.<\/p>\n<p>She followed that up with a solid triple Lutz-triple toe loop combo and triple loop, but it was still not enough to pass the 70-point mark.
