The stars of \u201cSinners\u201d recreated the \u201cPierce the Veil\u201d segment from the film at\u00a0the 98th Oscars\u00a0with a stirring rendition of \u201cI Lied to You\u201d from an all-star cast of musicians led by\u00a0Miles Caton\u00a0and\u00a0Raphael Saadiq.<\/p>\n

Caton and Saadiq paid homage to Ryan Coogler\u2019s film alongside an impressive array of musicians and performers including Misty Copeland, Eric Gales, Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Christone \u201cKingfish\u201d Ingram, Jayme Lawson, Li Jun Li, Bobby Rush, Shaboozey and Alice Smith. The performance was billed ahead of time as a tribute to the film\u2019s \u201csingular visual style.\u201d<\/p>\n

Saadiq set off the segment by strumming on the guitar before passing it to Caton, who sang the first verse with support, at one point, from Shaboozey. On a set resembling the film\u2019s Club Juke, the subsequent all-star cast joined in \u2014 Brittany Howard on guitar, Alice Smith singing, and Misty Copeland dancing ballet as she came together with the ensemble to finish off the song.<\/p>\n

Caton, who played the young version of Sammie in \u201cSinners,\u201d has performed the song alongside Saadiq and composer Ludwig G\u00f6ransson several times since the film\u2019s release, including renditions on \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live\u201d and the American Cinematheque Awards. \u201cI Lied to You,\u201d of course, earned an Oscar nod for best original song, one of the record-breaking 16 nominations that \u201cSinners\u201d achieved.<\/p>\n

\"I<\/p>\n

The \u201cSinners\u201d soundtrack and score played an integral role in the film, inspired by music from the 1930s and \u201940s and blues artists like Robert Johnson. \u201cI Lied to You\u201d is played in one of the defining scenes in \u201cSinners,\u201d where Sammie sings the song at a juke joint as Black music\u2019s lineage swirls around him. It was one of two \u201cSinners\u201d songs submitted for Oscar consideration alongside \u201cLast Time (I Seen the Sun),\u201d a soulful duet performed by Smith and Caton and co-written by Smith, Caton and G\u00f6ransson.<\/p>\n

Outside of original song, \u201cSinners\u201d was nominated for a record-breaking 16 awards, including best picture, director, actor, supporting actor, supporting actress and original screenplay, among several others.<\/p>\n
